Feb 2, 2012 – The Orlando Magic waived Larry Hughes on Wednesday night, following a 109-103 win over the Orlando Magic. Hughes came off the bench in that game, playing 14 minutes and scoring two points on 1-of-4 shooting. The move opens up a roster spot and the Magic are expected to quickly bring up a replacement.

The official team site confirmed the news on Wednesday night.

Following tonight’s game vs. Washington, the Orlando Magic have waived guard Larry Hughes, President of Basketball Operations/GM Otis Smith announced. Orlando’s roster now stands at 14 players.

And there’s this, which … ouch.

As for the replacement, Marc Spears reports Ish Smith is expected to join the Magic on Thursday.

For Hughes, this is likely the end of the line. His time in Orlando this season was always regarded as a trial run, with retirement lingering as a fall-back option.

Magic waive Hughes, on verge of signing PG Ish Smith

The Orlando Magic were on the verge of signing Ish Smith late Wednesday night to shore up their injury-depleted point guard spot.

To make room for Smith on their roster, the Magic waived Larry Hughes after Hughes played 14 minutes in the team’s 109-103 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Smith, 23, is a truer point guard than Hughes.

Team officials decided that they needed to make a move largely because the regular starter, Jameer Nelson, is recovering from a concussion and probably won’t return to playing until Monday at the earliest.

Smith was waived by the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 13 after he had appeared in six games.

Meanwhile, Nelson is making progress as he recovers from his latest concussion.

He visited Amway Center at midday and rode an exercise bike.

“I’m feeling a lot better,” Nelson said.

Dwight Howard broke into a huge grin when he saw Nelson walking into the arena around 12:30 p.m. “Heeey, maaan!” Howard yelled. “That’s my brother! How ya feeling, man?”

Coach Stan Van Gundy said Nelson still experienced some nausea Tuesday but improved Wednesday. Nelson’s return will be governed by the league’s new concussion protocol, which is overseen by neurologist Jeffrey Kutcher, an associate professor at the University of Michigan.

Van Gundy said the team is optimistic that Nelson will play Monday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Out again

The Magic kept starting shooting guard Jason Richardson out of the lineup Wednesday for the second straight game because the left knee Richardson originally injured Jan. 12 remains weak.
Richardson’s knee does well at the beginning of games, but it tightens up after he sits for a while.
“We’re optimistic that we’ll get him back on Friday,” Van Gundy said. “It’s not a sure thing, but we’re pretty optimistic.”

Offensive adjustment

The Magic began their game Wednesday using a different method to call plays after an opponent’s made basket.

Van Gundy had made the calls for most of this season, which forced Orlando’s ball-handlers to look at him after made baskets. That slowed down the team’s pace and helped opposing defenses get set.

But they opened Wednesday using a process they have used at other times during Van Gundy’s tenure. The point guards have three or four options, and Van Gundy is allowing the ball-handlers to make the calls on the run.

“Hopefully, we can get into things a little quicker with them not looking to the bench and get into a little bit of a flow,” Van Gundy said. “But we’ll probably be going back and forth on this until we get it right, until we get what we want.”

In theory, the change should help Orlando’s wings and big men run up the court more quickly. It also should help the ball-handlers attack north to south more easily when opponents pick them up with fullcourt pressure.

Layups

• Van Gundy said he and his assistant coaches still are considering lineup changes and changes to the way players are rotated on and off the court. “The only thing we’re interested in is trying to hit the right balance in terms of energy and having offensive playmakers on the floor,” Van Gundy said. “And I’m not sure that we have a good balance with that.”

• Van Gundy added: “I do think we have to look at the combinations we’ve had on the floor.”

• Rashard Lewis played his second game at Amway Center since his trade to the Wizards on Dec. 18, 2010. He received some good cheers during the starters’ introductions.

• The Magic committed six turnovers in the first quarter. Van Gundy had said before the game it was critical for Orlando to protect the basketball, partly because Washington has super-fast point guard John Wall.

Howard records another double-double as Magic defeat Bobcats

ORLANDO — Dwight Howard had 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Orlando Magic past the Charlotte Bobcats 96-89 Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Jameer Nelson scored 17 points, Hedo Turkoglu had 15 and Von Wafer 13 as the Magic won for the 10th time in 12 games.

Gerald Henderson had 22 points for Charlotte, which has lost eight of its last nine. The Bobcats are also winless in their last five trips to Orlando.

Charlotte stayed close throughout and pulled within a basket late in the fourth quarter before Ryan Anderson’s 3-pointer extended Orlando’s lead to 86-81 with 1:33 to play.

Turkoglu and Wafer scored eight points each in the decisive fourth quarter.

Charlotte went into halftime with a 50-47 advantage after a scrappy first half that included eight ties and seven lead changes.

Both teams shot 48 percent from the field, but the Magic struggled from both the 3-point line (3 for 10) and at the free-throw line (4 for 10). Charlotte was for 4 for 8 beyond the arc and a perfect 8 for 8 from the line, in addition to holding a 22-20 rebounding edge.

The Bobcats benefited from some Magic foul trouble in the opening 12 minutes to take a seven-point lead.

Howard and Turkoglu were forced to the bench after picking up two fouls each less than five minutes into the game.

Without two of Orlando’s starters to deal with Charlotte closed the quarter on a 16-5 run. Henderson led all scorers with eight first-quarter points.

NOTES: Magic G Jason Richardson missed his second consecutive game with a bone bruise in his left knee. … Orlando concludes its lone three games in three days stretch of the season Wednesday night against visiting San Antonio. … After playing five games in six days, the Bobcats are off until Saturday when they play at Chicago to begin a stretch of four games in five nights.

That’s all the news for today.

Magic turns back the Bobcats

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic looked tired Tuesday night.

But Dwight Howard, Von Wafer and Glen Davis provided a spark.

Playing their second game in as many nights, and with another one looming Wednesday night, the Magic overcame a listless start and eked out a ragged 96-89 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats at Amway Center.

It wasn’t pretty, but it still counts as Orlando’s fifth consecutive win.

“It’s not like any other season where we get chances to get breaks and rest here and there,” said Howard, who scored 25 points and collected 17 rebounds, both game highs. “So, we’ve got to really count on our defense, because there’s going to be nights where offensively we’re not shooting the ball well.”

Wafer, a shooting guard who came off the bench because starter Jason Richardson was out with an injury, added 13 points, including a key 3-pointer down the stretch.

Davis’ stat line was unimpressive — he scored just six points and gathered three rebounds in almost 30 minutes — but he repeatedly attempted to draw charges and dived to the parquet floor for loose basketballs.

His play seemed to inspire his teammates, who allowed the Bobcats to make almost 49 percent of their shots in the first half but limited the Bobcats to just under 45 percent shooting in the second half.

“Look, in the first half, we didn’t put much into the game, particularly at the defensive end of the floor,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said.

“The second half, I thought we played a lot harder defensively. What I said at halftime to ’em was, ’At some point, if we want to be good, we’re gonna have to become a defensive team.’ “

It would be a mistake to give the Magic (10-3) too much credit for their second-half performance against the Bobcats (3-12), a team with no stars and no legitimate go-to scorer.

Still, the Magic can win their sixth consecutive game if they beat the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.

“If we’re playing like this in April, then that’s one thing,” Wafer said. “But it’s too early right now. It’s giving us confidence. It’s bringing us closer together. But as far as meaning, it doesn’t really mean much if we don’t finish.”

On Tuesday night, the Magic’s start was the problem.

And it didn’t help that Howard picked up two personal fouls in the game’s first 4 minutes, 36 seconds.

Magic run past Pacers

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – All Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy wanted was one more decent showing from his team in its regular-season finale.

Mission accomplished.

Ryan Anderson scored 14 points, and Dwight Howard had 13 points and 13 rebounds in a short night of work as the Magic cruised to a 92-74 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

Mike Dunleavy and Brandon Rush both scored 16 points for Indiana.

Orlando beat the Pacers for the fifth straight time, including three victories this season. The Magic also concluded their fourth consecutive 50-win season by winning four of their final five games.

Now Van Gundy just hopes his team is ready to kick up its effort for the playoffs.

“If we play well, if we’re healthy and we play at a good energy level and can play to our potential, we can beat anybody,” Van Gundy said. “I think our chances are as good as anyone. But we have to play well.”

The Magic host Atlanta on Saturday night in a Game 1 matchup of the fourth and fifth seeds. The Pacers open their first playoff series in five years on Saturday afternoon against top-seeded Chicago.

Orlando’s playoff prep was clearly already under way Wednesday, and the Magic were able to get their starters a little rest even with some bodies missing from their ideal postseason rotation.

The game was sloppy at times, with the teams combining for 46 turnovers, including 28 by Orlando that produced 27 Indiana points. Still, the Magic led by double digits for most of the game, allowing Howard to play just 26 minutes and leave the game for the final time with 8:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. None of the other Magic starters played more than 25 minutes.

The lead was as many as 17 in the first half before the Pacers trimmed it to 33-26 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Indiana’s momentum quickly stalled, though, after big man Roy Hibbert was whistled for his fifth personal foul with 4:25 left in the half. The Magic took advantage of the open paint and closed the period with a 20-3 spurt to lead 53-29 at the break.

Indiana cut into the lead a little in the second half, but never really threatened.

Howard said despite the periods of ugliness, the team is prepared for the postseason.

“We feel good, we’re ready to go,” Howard said. “It’s playoff time, it’s the real season.”

Orlando has been hobbled by a string of nagging injuries down the stretch, but it got some welcomed news early Wednesday.

Reserve guard J.J. Redick sat out his 17th straight game, but was able to do some light work during their morning shootaround. He estimated he’d be able to complete a live practice by the end of the week and expected to be available for the playoffs.

Backup point guard Gilbert Arenas got the night off to rest his sore knees and left calf muscle. He said it was just precautionary, though, and that an MRI on the tender left knee that kept him out of Monday’s win over Philadelphia was negative. He also expects to be ready for the Atlanta series.

Indiana rested starting forward Danny Granger and reserve forward Jeff Foster and clearly will have to play a lot better to compete with a hot Chicago club. The Pacers shot a dismal 30 percent Wednesday and didn’t get any of their starters in double figures. Hibbert picked up five fouls in just 9 minutes of the first half and didn’t play in the second.

The Pacers also had 18 turnovers, which led to 16 Magic points.

“We certainly didn’t want to be blown out the way we were,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. “We wanted to be more competitive than we were. We played to win with the guys we had on the court. We just didn’t play well enough.”

Hibbert said they know Wednesday’s effort isn’t good enough going forward.

“We are going to have to turn it up another notch,” Hibbert said. “Chicago is a very good team. We are just going to go up there and play really, really hard.”

Vogel also said there’s no way to sugarcoat the matchup with Chicago.

“It’s a tall task, but our guys are playing their best basketball of the season right now and we’re excited about being in the playoffs.”

NOTES: Redick said he isn’t concerned about the short time he has to get his stamina back before the start of the playoffs. “It’s only been a month, so it’s not like it’s been six months and it’s not like I’ve been coming back from a longer injury,” he said. “It might be a game, it might be three games, I don’t know. But I don’t think it’ll take too long to get back into playing rhythm.” … Indiana rested F Danny Granger and C Jeff Foster. Pacers interim coach Frank Vogel said Granger was kept out to reduce the chances of a stress fracture in his ankle and Foster was resting a sore back. … Indiana F Solomon Jones was whistled for a flagrant 1 foul on Jameer Nelson in the first quarter and James Posey was called for another on Earl Clark in the fourth. … NBA referee Bob Delaney, who was officiating his final regular-season game Wednesday after a 36-year career, was honored in the pregame.

What are your opinions.
